Freshwater & mother-of-pearl are evidently pretty & affordable. I saw conch & melo pearls and they lie at other end of the  affordability spectrum. Conch and melo pearls are coral like and non flashy.

A shell nucleus is seeded into the oyster to make cultured saltwater pearls. The oysters, over time, secrete a nacre/calcium- transparent crystalline substance which covers this nucleus. The nacre coating various between half mm to 2-6 mm depending on the type of pearls. This isn't the case with freshwater pearls as there is no hard nucleus inserted in freshwater pearls, freshwater pearls are almost all nacre. This is the biggest selling point for freshwater pearl is that freshwater pearl are all pearl.
